Follow These 4 Tips For Staying In A Hotel With A Dog

tips to stay at a hotel with a dog

Are you familiar with pet-friendly hotel etiquette? Now that you’ve found the perfect pet-friendly accommodation for you and your furry companion, you’ll want to make sure you and your pup are ready to stay at the hotel. You may be asking yourself if you can leave your dog unattended, what to do if they bark, or if they should be sleeping on the hotel bed next to you. Read on for our tips for staying in a hotel with a dog!

1. Double check the hotel is dog-friendly (and how friendly)

We have a large collection of resources to help you find the best dog-friendly hotel. Don’t be fooled by the term “pet-friendly” because many accommodations may have hidden pet fees and a list of restrictions. Here at Romingo, we save you the hassle by partnering with the best hotels to bring you a true pet-friendly experience. There are no hidden pet fees and we guarantee you will pay $0 in pet fees always. You can find the lowest room rates and enjoy flexible cancellations on all your bookings. Browse hotels HERE.

2. Try not to leave your pet unattended, but if you have to…

We understand that there may be activities during your trip that are only human-friendly. It may make more sense to leave your pup in the hotel for a couple of hours and that’s okay! Just be sure that your pup is comfortable and prepared to be alone. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Bring along interactive toys/chews: Something interactive will keep your pup stimulated, distracted, and entertained while you’re away. This will curb unwanted behaviors such as barking or chewing. Make sure that the toys and chews are sturdy to avoid a choking hazard.
  • Give them access to water: This is self-explanatory! You don’t want your pup feeling dehydrated.
  • Let them out to potty and exercise before you go: If your dog has a lot of pent up energy while you’re gone, it will be more likely that they’ll act out in unwanted ways. Be sure they have gone potty before you leave to avoid any messy accidents, and that they have gotten a chance to get fresh air and some exercise before you go.

You know your dog best. If they have severe separation anxiety, tend to bark excessively, or are not fully potty-trained yet, then consider training them before taking them on trips or find ways to avoid leaving them unattended. Traveling can be stressful for some dogs so you want to be sure your dog is in good shape.

3. How about sleeping on the hotel bed?

Many dog owners feel comfortable with their pups joining them in bed, but some hotels may not allow that. Most dog-friendly hotels will let Fido cuddle up next to you in bed! Here are some pet-friendly hotel etiquette tips you can follow:

  • Double check to see if pets are allowed on the bed
  • Bring your own sheet or blanket that your pup is used to so they have a designated spot on your bed (plus you’ll keep the hotel’s comforter nice and clean!)
  • Pack a lint roller and pet stain remover in case of accidents
  • Is your dog more comfortable sleeping on their own bed? Bring along your pup’s favorite plush bed so they can cozy up in their own space
  • If your dog is crate trained, we recommend bringing along the crate for ease of traveling and sleeping as well

4. Clean up!

Clean up after your pet before checking out of the hotel. Some cleaning essentials to bring on a pet-friendly vacation include a pet stain remover or odor eliminating spray, wet wipes, and potty bags. For more on dog travel essentials, check out these resources:
