dog-friendly cities in the united states

Looking to experience a change of scenery with your pup? Good thing there are hundreds of dog-friendly cities in the United States! So many, in fact, that it can be overwhelming to think about which ones to visit first. That’s why we created Romingo! We’re a travel agency designed to help you narrow down your choices and find the best hotels to fit your and your pooch’s needs.

In an effort to help you plan the perfect trip, we’ve compiled a list of the best and most dog-friendly cities in the United States:

1. San Diego

The state of California in general has great options when traveling with your dog. With its pleasant climate and unique cities, the entire state is wonderful to visit if you want to enjoy quality time with your dog. There are miles of beaches, beginner and advanced hikes, and a variety of restaurants, shopping centers, and hotels that welcome pets.

However, of all the places in California, San Diego takes the crown for the most dog-friendly city. There are endless outdoor spaces to explore like the Ocean Dog Beach which is located on the west end of Voltaire Street. This off-leash dog beach is one of the most popular on the West Coast. You can also visit Dog Run Beach, which is the North Beach of Coronado Beach in front of Sunset Park. Dogs can go off-leash 24 hours a day!

Then make your way to Pacific Beach’s Capehart Dog Park. This one-acre park offers fenced pens — one for small hounds and one for large hounds. The park also includes a fountain, picnic tables, and benches.

Highlight: if you visit San Diego in August, you and your dog can catch the Imperial Beach Surf Dog Competition! Romingo currently offers luxury stays in all major cities on the West Coast and will be expanding all across the U.S. soon!

2. Miami

People in Miami are super dog-friendly. Check out the beach called Haulover, where you can find warm weather and lovely crystal clear water.

Blanche Park located in Coconut Grove is another  place you don’t want to miss. Your dog will love this park with areas specifically designed for both small dogs and large dogs. There are also plenty of parks, malls, and public places perfect for spending time with your pet.

3. Austin

As we know, Texas is ranch country and where there are ranches, there are dogs. There is a large dog-owner population in Texas and we’ve found the city of Austin to be especially dog-friendly. You’ll find parks like Red Bud Isle Park that are fantastic for you to spend a fun afternoon together with your bestie.

Don’t forget to visit Zilker Park which is a great recreational space with specialized pet activities from yoga to kayaking.  Austin is also known for great dog-friendly outdoor restaurants (bbq, anyone?) with plenty of outdoor entertainment venues.

4. New York

This place was made to pamper pooches: from swanky grooming parlors and nurseries, to professional dog walkers and restaurants that offer gourmet dog-menus. NYC will take care of you and your four-legged companion while visiting.

Central Park alone has 23 areas designated for dogs to move around without a leash! This is a must-do experience for you and your dog in the middle of this bustling city.

Chicago is our kind of dog-friendly city! Take your dog to Lake Michigan, where sailing on a boat is mandatory to enjoy the beautiful views. Then hop on over to Navy Pier, where you can walk along 3,300 feet of the pier together, and even enjoy some delicious dog-friendly snacks in their dog pastry store!
